So a little while ago my mom finished New Moon and she always chats with me about what she recently read. Well she was telling me once about how she was at the part where Edward wants to get himself killed because he thinks Bella is dead. And I had a thought. Why does a vampire need the Volturi to kill them? Clearly they use the burn method as was used on James and Victoria. So why can a vampire not simply burn themselves?
My only thoughts are that they either need to be ripped apart first or it just couldn't be like that because it's too easy and we would lose Edward. It's interesting to consider though.

I believe (and i don't know for sure) Edward does explain that himself in the beginning of New Moon when he tells Bella about suicide when she is dead or something can't remember it correctly, he needs to be ripped apart and then burn the pieces. I just remember someone also Say's it in the film when they are in the Cullen garage and go running for James, Carlisle respond to that he doesn't like to kill someone of their own kind not even a sadistic one as James.

I didn't look it up sorry, but i just remembered...
When Carlisle was turned into a vampire he tried to kill himself, he tried drowning, starving and jumping of a cliff (which is very popular in the twilight saga). I know he didn't know about burning and all since he was left to sort it out all by himself. He never drank a humans blood, his first blood was a deer.... sorry about the last part i know it is kinda off-topic....

Yeah but burning actually works when done on another vampire so I was talking specifically about that here. But yes I did mention in the first post that I considered their needing to be ripped apart first. I believe that is the answer. Thanks.

I believe that if Edward had thought about it, he could have killed himself without going to the Volturi. Yes, in Twilight he did say that you have to rip a vampire apart and then burn the pieces, but, in Breaking Dawn, and I'm not sure exactly where, (I don't have the book with me now to check)but either when Edward is explaining Alec's power to Bella or when the Volturi come to destroy Nessie, I think it says something about Alec incapacitating them and not even bothering to rip them apart, but, to just through them into the flames. I think that the riping of the body is just a way to make a vampire immobile so they can not flee while being burned. I mean, even if you were a weak human, you could still run away and attempt to put out the fire, so, I'm more than positive a vampire could do the same with even more positive results. I'm sure that if you asked Stephanie, she would say that Edward was too grief stricken to think of just burning himself, and that he could not think of anything else to do than to go to Volterra.

Yeah I think I remember something like that, and I also forgot to mention in the first place that I also had the thought from when Bella is waiting for J. Jenks at the restaurant and puts out her hands near the fire so her skin won't be cold and bother him when she shakes hands with him. And as she stares at the fire she wonders what it would be like to touch it, to burn.
That makes sense although when someone is too full of grief to go on living they usually do something to themselves. Like someone above mentioned that Carlisle did. But yes I suppose being what he is the thought would not have occurred to him because he could not think of anything but Bella while he was away from her because it drove him crazy.

I think also Edward is a very dramatic character, and possibly wanted to be as bold as possible.
