I am not sure, I think it would be better if it was a king in checkmate..... but then again it would complicate the cover a little, and Stephenie's covers are very simple....

Bella's a queen? Or maybe it has to do with that girl... the one that [most likely...] killed those tourist... >> When Bella and Edward were reunited again? Maybe she's the queen of something... Because Stephenie Meyer rarely spoke about her :\ and she was on the way to see the Volturi... >> and eat... so... just a thought...

Me and my friend talked about the cover last night, and this is what we think......
The queen is Bella, but not literally though. The queen is the main character, in chess you kill the queen, than many times you have a good chance of winning. The pawns, maybe Jacob or Edward. Since its red, which means it on the other side of the white queen, they are trying to kill the queen. Edward will take her life, in order for her to be a vampire. Jacob, at what point will he stop to make sure she doesn't turn in a vampire. Or it could be the Volturi, or another vampire, trying to kill Bella. We also notice on the cover, the pawn is on a white square the queen is on a black, in the game they must be on the same color of block....is there a reason to this?
This is where we got.....who knows if it is right or not though.

If you've read the book...
I think that the queen represents Bella, of course. But since the pawn is red and BEHIND her. I think it represents Nessie. In her dreams she was protecting Nessie. And in many of them the babies eyes were red. And the whole blood deal would possibly make it red too.. But the whole fact that its smaller and the weakest link in a chess game it to me seems more like Bellas protecting Nessie on the cover. =] <3

i think it like a metaphor for the entire saga coz you have bella going from the weakest player on the board (the pawn) to being the most powerful one (the queen) i like it

I was thinking more of the Volturi. They have been playing EVERYONE, the Cullens included. Bella's the queen, we all know that, but the Volturi are the ones who are playing the game..... Does that make any sense?

Well the actually reason (And I got this from Stephenie's website) the pawn represents what Bella was like in the beginning when she met Edward. And now she's the queen, she became more powerful in a way. So it's like how she was before to now. I don't know if that makes sense, but I read it from her site.
